BusinessIndia-Canada try to strengthen relations in PM Trudeau’s new term

Under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s third term, India and Canada have chosen to take their bilateral relationship to the next level, with intentions to strengthen security, defence, and trade connections in order to overcome their troubled relations in recent years.

Ajay Bisaria, India’s High Commissioner to Canada, said the countries are pursuing “new steps” to have “better cooperation” in a changing geopolitical context in an exclusive interview with the media.

Trudeau was re-elected to a historic third term as Prime Minister of Canada in September 2021. “With Canada’s new government in place, we’re looking forward to additional initiatives in the next year.” We expect to see more cooperation between our two G20 economies and Indo-Pacific democracies in the future. “We can expect India and Canada to deepen their economic, security, and defence ties,” Bisaria added.

On the strategic front, he added that Canada is anticipated to reveal its Indo-Pacific policy in the coming months, which will bring the two countries closer together in terms of a bigger geopolitical alignment.

“The two countries have very similar perspectives on the Indo-Pacific dynamics. Given its role as a sister democracy in the area, India continues to brief Canada on its vision of the Indo-Pacific. Overall, both sides expect significant political, strategic, and security convergences,” Bisaria added.

Earlier this week, India joined the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, and Korea in ‘Sea Dragon 22,’ a multi-national exercise focused on anti-submarine warfare that is presently happening in the Indo-Pacific.

Bisaria also stated that India and Canada hope to “make significant progress toward an interim trade deal” in 2022, which will eventually lead to a full-fledged Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

“Talks at the technical level began in 2021. “This subject has just been discussed by commerce ministers, and experts are anticipated to hold official negotiations soon,” he added.

Formal negotiations between India and Canada for a CEPA began in 2010, however the talks have stalled due to disagreements over market access and tariff reduction problems.

According to official estimates, two-way merchandise trade between Canada and India reached $10.1 billion in 2019, but dropped to $8.7 billion in 2020 because to the Covid-19 epidemic.
